FAQs

  • What is the OONP Drone Operations Training Course?

The OONP (Operations Over or Near People) course teaches drone operators how to safely and legally conduct flights near people, adhering to CASA regulations 101.245 and 101.280.

  • What are the CASA regulations for operating drones near people?

    • CASR 101.245: Mandates a minimum 30-meter distance from people not involved in the operation, but allows for operations within 15-30 meters with consent.
    • CASR 101.280: Prohibits non-certified RPAs from operating over populous areas unless approved by CASA.
  • What are the three pathways to approval for OONP operations?

    1. Operations with written consent in controlled environments, suitable for RPAs up to 25kg.
    2. Operations based on low kinetic energy impact (max 15 joules, 34 joules if sheltered with consent), suitable for smaller RPAs or those with safety mitigations.
    3. SORA-based assessments for complex operations, allowing for larger RPAs and more flexible scenarios.
  • What is a controlled environment and who are active participants?

A controlled environment is an area where only active participants and RPA crew are present, ensuring no third-party entry. Active participants are those directly involved in the activity, such as performers or emergency personnel.

  • What are the consent requirements?

Operators must gain written consent from participants, ensuring they are briefed on risks, safety measures, and emergency procedures.

  • How is kinetic energy calculated and mitigated?

Kinetic energy is calculated based on the RPA's weight and speed. Mitigations include limiting speed, using safety systems like parachutes, and ensuring RPAs are small enough to meet the energy thresholds.

  • What is the SORA methodology?

SORA (Specific Operational Risk Assessment) is a comprehensive risk assessment process that evaluates the safety of complex operations, requiring validation for higher risk elements.

  • What support does Hover UAV provide for developing CONOPS?

Hover UAV offers regulatory packages and free consultations to help operators define their Concept of Operations (CONOPS), ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and operational needs.
